EXPERT BIOS
Dr Belinda Davis

Dr. Belinda Davis is the Orchid Conservation Research Scientist at Kings Park Science. She has dedicated over two decades to researching threatened orchids in the southwest region of Western Australia. Her research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including orchid physiology, symbiotic fungi association, pollinator interaction, plant tissue culture, ex-situ conservation and propagation, and species translocation. Dr. Davis plays a pivotal role in the successful reintroduction of the critically endangered Caladenia busselliana, transforming a dwindling population of just 4 individuals into a thriving, self-sustaining population of 570.

Dr. Davis has authored publications in leading scientific journals, and her work on orchid conservation has been widely recognised both nationally and internationally. She collaborates with government authorities, research institutes, conservation agencies, fellow researchers, and dedicated volunteers to develop and implement effective conservation practices of rare orchids. Her research has provided valuable insights into conservation strategies, significantly influencing on-ground conservation efforts to protect rare and endangered orchids across Western Australia and beyond.

Katie Elder

Ms. Katie Elder is the Ex-situ Conservation Research Technician at Kings Park Science. With a Master's in Botany from the University of Western Australia, Katie plays a key role in supporting various research projects involving the micropropagation of plants in tissue culture and the cryopreservation of plant materials. She has contributed to the optimisation of storage protocols for diverse native flora of Western Australia, leading to improved success in the long-term ex-situ conservation of threatened species.

Katie collaborates closely with research scientists and project teams, providing essential technical support in the planning and execution of experiments. She is also involved in the training of students and volunteers, sharing her knowledge and expertise in plant biotechnology. Katie’s contributions are vital to ongoing efforts to conserve plant biodiversity and explore new frontiers in plant biotechnology.

Eugenie Au

Ms. Eugenie Au is a Science Communicator with extensive knowledge of research happening at Kings Park Science. She is responsible for conveying complex scientific concepts in an accessible and engaging manner to the broader community. With a strong background in nature interpretation and a Master’s in Science Communication from the University of Western Australia, Eugenie aims to establish conversations between Kings Park Science with diverse stakeholders to increase stakeholders engagement with native flora.

Eugenie is skilled in curating engagement events, such as guided walks and educational programs. Her experience in science communication is a valuable asset to Kings Park Science’s public engagement efforts, contributing to the development of educational materials, coordinating public outreach events, and collaborating with researchers to promote plant science through various media channels. Her work not only enhances science communication quality of the team but also plays an important role in increasing community awareness and engagement of Western Australia’s flora conservation research.
AMENITIES
Toilets are available throughout Kings Park and we will make many stops through our hike.
PARKING
Parking is available at the Wadjuk Carpark near Fraser Ave, behind the Aspects Gallery, which is where we will be meeting.
HIKE GRADING
This hike is a grade 2. It is suitable for families with children. No bushwalking or hiking experience required. These trails tend to be on hard or compacted surfaces, with a small amount of loose surface. Due to distance, we recommend a basic level of fitness.
CANCELLATION POLICY
No-shows and cancellations received within 48 hours of hike departure will incur a 100% cancellation fee.

Cancellations within 2-7 days prior will incur a 50% cancellation fee. Cancellations received over 7 days in advance will receive a full refund or credit towards another hike experience. Please note that Rezdy fees are non refundable. Guests can transfer their booking to a friend with no penalty but must advise The Hike Collective so we can forward all booking information to the new attendee.

If The Hike Collective cancels an event due to weather or danger in any way, your ticket will automatically be moved to the new date, or you will be eligible to transfer amounts paid to another tour or receive a full refund.
